Get ready for Learn to Sign WeekPublished in Featured,News on 28th September, 2009

The British Deaf Association’s annual drive to encourage more people to learn British Sign Language (BSL) starts on Monday 5 October.Learn to Sign Week is an opportunity for staff and friends in organisations to develop new language and interpersonal skills.  Perhaps there is someone in your office who is Deaf and you would like to be able to communicate better with them?  Or do you work in a customer-facing role and want to be able to improve your service to Deaf clients?  Learn to Sign Week can help you to provide an environment that is welcoming to Deaf BSL people who come into contact with your organisation.

Learn to Sign Week can be accessed through the British Deaf Association’s website, which will allow you and your staff to take part in the campaign without ever having to leave the office. The website will include a phrase per day throughout the week as well as additional vocabulary for those who are a bit more adventurous and are willing to try something new. The web based resources are great fun to do in groups as you can start to practice your new skills with each other. This ideal opportunity could be the beginning of greater and more equal access to services for Deaf BSL users all over the country.

The Association ask that all organisations taking part in Learn to Sign Week fundraise a minimum of £200.  To register your organisation, log on to http://www.bda.org.uk/ and follow the links to “Learn to Sign Week”.
